Parag Honour List 2024 is out

Parag Honour List, an initiative by Tata Trusts, is a curated collection of outstanding books in English and Hindi for children and young adults. Every year this list brings well-deserved recognition to noteworthy books, guiding children, parents, and teachers towards quality children’s literature. This year’s list of exemplary work in children’s literature is out.

As per this year’s criteria, they received original writing in the category of picture books, young readers and young adults, in fiction, non-fiction and poetry, from 48 Indian publishers, published between October 2022 and September 2023. This year’s Parag Honour List features 28 books in English and 13 books in Hindi, carefully handpicked from a pool of 258 submissions.

The PHL jury for English had on board Mini Shrinivasan, a children’s writer, an educator and Sahitya Akademi awardee based in Pune; Samina Mishra, an acclaimed documentary filmmaker, writer, and teacher based in New Delhi, with a special interest in media for and about children; and Thejaswi Shivanand, a library educator at Champaca Children’s Library based in Bengaluru.

The PHL Hindi jury had poet and essayist Arun Kamal who is a former professor of literature at Patna University; Prachi Kalra who teaches courses in literacy at Gargi College University and a course in children’s literature and storytelling; Malvika Rai, literary coach at Shiv Nadar School.

The Big Little Book Award, a first-of-its-kind award, lauds the significant contribution made by authors and illustrators to Indian children’s literature. This year, the coveted award for illustration was presented to Suddhasattwa Basu, who is a painter , illustrator and animation film maker. His “work stands apart from many illustrators because of his meticulous attention to the design and finish of the book”, says the jury.
