2024 ALA Youth Media Awards Announced

The American Library Association’s Youth Media Awards 2024 announced the top honours in children’s and young adult literature including the Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, Newbery, Stonewall and Geisel awards.

Author Dave Eggers was awarded the John Newbery Medal 2024, which is given to the most distinguished American children’s book published the previous year, for his middle grade book The Eyes and the Impossible, which was illustrated by Shawn Harris.

While on the other hand, the Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished American picture book for children was awarded to author and illustrator Vashti Harrison, for her picture book Big.

The other notable winners are:

The Coretta Scott King Author Book Award recognizing an African American author and illustrator of outstanding books for children and young adults is awarded to Ibi Zoboi, for Nigeria Jones.

Cross My Heart, written and illustrated by Nora Dåsnes and translated by Matt Bagguley is the 2024 recipient of the Stonewall Book Awards – Mike Morgan & Larry Romans Children’s Literature Award.

Only This Beautiful Moment, written by Abdi Nazemian is the 2024 recipient of the Stonewall Book Awards – Mike Morgan & Larry Romans Young Adult Literature Award.

Fox Has a Problem, written and illustrated by Corey R. Tabor has been awarded the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for most distinguished beginning reader book.

Pam Muñoz Ryan was honoured with the Children’s Literature Legacy Award for her contribution to literature for children through books that demonstrate integrity and respect for all children’s lives and experiences.

Recognized worldwide for the high quality they represent, ALA awards guide parents, educators,
librarians and others in selecting the best materials for youth. Selected by judging committees of
librarians and other children’s experts, the awards encourage original and creative work.
